The project was commissioned by R.H. Fullwood & Co, a multidisciplinary contractor that works with local authorities to improve communities through the highest standard of construction schemes.
When you decide to work with a professional metal engineering company such as Pearlgreen, you’re opening up a world of opportunities to express unique ideas and transform your surroundings. Playful Area is a perfect example of this, as it allowed us to apply a variety of our skills and services to create something particularly special.
What is Playful Area?
The project was commissioned by R.H. Fullwood & Co, a multidisciplinary contractor that works with local authorities to improve communities through the highest standard of construction schemes.
Working alongside the highly talented artist Adrian Riley of Electric Angel, we designed aluminium lettering for a structure that would be fixed to decking to form a vibrant play area complete with seating. Located on the picturesque Canal Side in Brighouse, it provides a great spot to rest your aching feet whilst the kids have fun and blow off some steam.
How was it made?
We were thrilled to work with Adrian Riley, as he’s a designer-artist with over 25 years of experience in graphic design, branding and the creation of artworks for public spaces. Playful Area gave Adrian a chance to be super creative and design something that would be both eye-catching and functional, which was a very exciting process to be involved in.
Following his imaginative designs, the metal engineering experts here at Pearlgreen produced laser-cut 6082 grade aluminium at exactly 12mm thick. We then machined the edges to form chunky letters and shapes that would add to the playful nature of the installation whilst remaining safe, sturdy and weather-resistant.
Applying our expertise
Metalworking is a highly precise undertaking and Playful Area also required Pearlgreen Engineering to mill out some of the metal elements on our point-to-point router. This enabled inlaid letters to perfectly in place, giving the end result a stylish engraved effect.
The entire piece was then painted in bright and contrasting colours that give it a life of its own. The final coat of paint had to be mixed with regal pumice to achieve a non-slip surface, ensuring that children can play freely without the risk of slipping off the play area.
Working with the architect
A large outdoor structure also requires a skilled architect to check that everything is manufactured and installed in line with public safety and numerous levels of compliance. This was carried out by the fantastic team at Xanthe Quayle Landscape Architects of Slaithwaite, with our specialists working closely with Landscape Architect Consultant Owen Byrom to guarantee fast, efficient and stress-free project delivery.
A winning combination
Here at Pearlgreen, we relish the opportunity to work with fellow specialists and wider teams, as amazing things can happen as a result. Collaborating with R.H. Fullwood, Adrian Riley and Xanthe Quayle Landscape Architects was a real treat for us and we couldn’t be more delighted with how Playful Area turned out.
